Né à Nice, de parents sicilien et espagnol, Patrick Messina commence sa carrière aux États-Unis, plus particulièrement à New York en 1996 lorsqu’il remporte le Premier Prix du East and West Artists International Auditions lui permettant de se produire en récital au Carnegie Hall.

Clarinettiste français de premier plan, Patrick Messina a acquis une reconnaissance internationale grâce à ses interprétations captivantes et à une sonorité reconnaissable qui insuffle sa singularité à travers un large répertoire.

Parallèlement à ses activités de soliste, il travaille pendant six ans avec le Metropolitan Opera de New York, sous la direction de James Levine, Valery Gergiev ou encore Leonard Slatkin.

En 2003 il devient 1ère clarinette solo de l’Orchestre National de France sous la direction de Kurt Masur.

Musicien très apprécié des plus grands chefs, Patrick Messina est invité régulièrement comme clarinette solo par de prestigieuses formations telles le Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra d’Amsterdam ou encore le Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Il se produit en soliste sous la direction de Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink, Tan Dun, Daniele Gatti, Yehudi Menuhin, Kristjan Järvi, Jaap Van Zweden, Sascha Goetzel, Anton Nanut, John Axelrod et Trevor Pinnock, avec notamment l’Orchestre Symphonique de Houston, l’Orchestre National de France, l’Orchestre de Cannes, l’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, l’Orchestre des Nations, l’Orchestre National d’Ile-de-France, l’Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Incheon (Corée), l’Orchestre Philharmonique National d’Ukraine, le Kioi Sinfonietta (Japon).

Son nom est à l’affiche des plus grands festivals, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Gstaad, Spoleto, Savannah, Mitte Europa, Pablo Casals, Les Flâneries Musicales, Menton, Besançon, Schleswig-Holstein, Berlioz, Pontlevoy, Wissembourg, Istanbul.

Il a comme partenaires Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Roger Muraro, Fabrizio Chiov, Simone Dinnerstein, Menahem Pressler, Jean-Marc Luisada, Edita Gruberova, Tatiana Vassiljeva, Gautier Capuçon, le Philharmonia Quartett Berlin (des Berliner Philharmoniker), les Quatuors Debussy, Diotima, Carducci, Fine Arts, Elysées, Parker, Vogler, Aron et le Beaux-Arts Trio.

Patrick Messina enregistre pour le label Aparté Music. Son dernier CD, paru en juin 2018, consacré à Arvo Pärt, Jaan Raats et Henryk Gorecki (avec Henri Demarquette et Fabrizio Chiovetta) a déjà été récompensé par un “Choc” de Classica ainsi que par 5 étoiles du magazine Pizzicato.

Son précédent album, dédié à Schumann, avait également été salué unanimement par la critique (5 de Diapason, 5 de Musica).

Avant cela on peut citer son remarquable album Mozart paru chez Harmonia Mundi, avec, notamment, le célèbre Concerto pour Clarinette, accompagné par l’Orchestre National de France, dirigé par Riccardo Muti. “Et si, tout simplement, on tenait là une des plus grandes références de Concerto de Mozart ? À chacun de juger : pour ce qui nous concerne, c’est fait”. (Concertonet)

Également très actif dans le domaine de la musique d’aujourd’hui, il est notamment le dédicataire du Concerto pour Clarinette de Bechara El-Khoury qu’il a enregistré en 2012 pour le label Naxos avec l’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris.

De plus, son intérêt pour les musiques du monde et l’improvisation l’amène à collaborer avec des artistes comme Ira Coleman, Mark Feldman, Lionel Loueke, Vincent Segal, Chico Pinheiro et le producteur Robert Sadin. Il a participé avec ce dernier à l’enregistrement de Placido Domingo “Encanto del mar” paru chez Sony et à l’album “the Journey” de Lionel Loueke (Aparté, 2018).

Patrick Messina commença l’apprentissage de la clarinette avec son père, puis au CRR de Nice dans la classe de Claude Crousier. Il poursuivra ensuite ses études au CNSMD de Paris avec Guy Deplus et Michel Arrignon, au Cleveland Institute of Music avec Franklin Cohen et au Mannes College de New York avec Ricardo Morales.

Depuis 2011 il est professeur à l’École Normale “Alfred Cortot” à Paris et plus récemment à l’IESM “Pôle Supérieur” d’Aix en Provence.

En juin 2016 il a été nommé Membre Honoraire de la Royal Academy of Music à Londres où il est également professeur invité.

 

 

 

 

Patrick Messina is well known to orchestras and audiences as one of the leading clarinetists of our times. In 2003, Patrick Messina became Principal Clarinet of the Orchestre National de France under Kurt Masur’s direction.

From 1996 to 2003, Patrick has worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York under the baton of James Levine, Valery Gergiev, Leonard Slatkin and he is regularly invited as guest Principal clarinetist with some of the best orchestra in the world, like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kurt Masur, Bernard Haitink and others.

A frequent soloist with major orchestras, Patrick Messina has performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Cannes, the Philharmonie der Nationen, the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Kioi Sinfonietta (Tokyo) and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Trevor Pinnock, Bernard Haitink, Yehudi Menuhin, Tan Dun, Daniele Gatti, Sascha Goetzel, Anton Nanut, Kristjan Järvi, Japp Van Sweden and John Axelrod.

An avid chamber music player, Messina has made regular international appearances with renowned artists such as Edita Gruberova, Daniel Hope, Bruno Giuranna, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Roger Muraro, Katia et Marielle Labèque, Gauthier Capuçon, and some of the greatest string quartets, the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin (Berlin Philharmonic), the Vogler, Parker, Diotima, Paris, Aron, Debussy, Élysées and Fine Arts.

He has played in some of the most prestigious Festivals like : Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Gstaad, Spoleto, Schleswig-Holstein, Savannah, Mitte Europa, Pablo Casals, Istanbul, Menton, Wissembourg, Berlioz.

Patrick Messina is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. In 1992, he became a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. In 1996 he won 1st Prize of the East and West International Auditions in New York and the Ima Hogg National Competition in Houston. In 1998 he was 1st Prize at the Heida Hermanns International Competition.

Aged only 18, he was the first prize winner in both the chamber music and clarinet divisions at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.

In 2010, Patrick Messina premieres the Clarinet Concerto “Autumn Pictures” from the French-Libanese composer Bechara El-Khoury at the Châtelet Theatre with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, conducted by Olari Elis (CD Naxos, 2014).

Also in that same year, Patrick Messina was appointed Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In 2012, Messina released his critically acclaim Mozart CD with Riccardo Muti, the Orchestre National de France and the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin (Harmonia Mundi distr.) described as “One of the greatest performances of the last twenty years” (Concertonet). “Here you can see what the fuss is about with Messina. This album announces the arrival of a major clarinet talent” (Allmusic)

Since 2017, Patrick is associated with the Aparté Record label with whom he has recorded a Schumann Album “Music for Clarinet” with pianist Fabrizio Chiovetta. This CD was a total critical success and had great reviews from magazines such as Diapason (5*****) and Musica (5*****).

Most recently “Kaleidoscopic”, a 20th Century music album with two world premiere recording of Arvo Pärt and Jan Rääts has received 5 stars from Pizzicato magazine and the prestigious “Choc” of Classica.

Born in Nice, France, of Sicilian and Spanish parents, Patrick began taking lessons with his father Aldo Messina, a clarinetist himself, and continued his studies with Guy Deplus, Michel Arrignon at the Paris Conservatory, Franklin Cohen at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Ricardo Morales in New York’s Mannes College.

Patrick Messina is a professor at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and at the IESM (Institut d’Enseignement Supérieur de la Musique, Pôle Supérieur) in Aix en Provence, France.

Patrick is also an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London where he is a regular visiting professor since 2011.
