Simon Rigter was born in Leiden on September 20, 1973. As the son of saxophonist Bob Rigter, he grew up in a musical environment. At the age of ten Simon received classical flute lessons and at the age of twelve he started the saxophone.

From 1989 to 1996 Simon studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he was taught by the well-known saxophonist / clarinettist John Ruocco. Afterwards he studied at the Hilversum conservatory at Ferdinand Povel. In 1997 Simon graduated from the Hilversum conservatory.

Simon has recorded CDs with The Dutch Jazz Orchestra, The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, The Reeds, Curtis Fuller, Slide Hampton, John Marshall, Cees Slinger, Victor Kaihatu, Peter Beets, Ruud Breuls, Erik Doelman, and many others.

Simon performed with George Coleman, Joe Cohn, Jim Rotondi, Nancy Marano, Alvin Queen, Ferdinand Povel, Ruud Jacobs, Pim Jacobs, Frans Elsen, Rob van Kreefelt, Peter Beets, Marco Kegel and many others.

Simon toured China, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, India, Israel, Jamaica and Japan.

Simon is a permanent member of The Dutch Jazz Orchestra, The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, The Reeds, Saxology, The Storyville Project, The New Quartet, The Ruud Breuls / Simon Rigter Quintet, Equinox, The Erik Goalkeeper Quartet , Bop2B.

Simon teaches at the Codarts institute in Rotterdam and at the Conservatory in Amsterdam.
