Clarinetist Staffan Mårtensson has established himself as one of Scandinavia’s most versatile instrumentalists. His repertoire ranges from the classical and romantic masterpieces to contemporary works, and he is also a skilled jazz improviser. Since 2001, he is Principal Clarinet at the Royal Swedish Opera.
A prize winner at national and international competitions, Staffan Mårtensson has performed since the early 1990s throughout Europe with German, French, Swiss, Austrian, Czech and Scandinavian orchestras.
Staffan Mårtensson’s recordings include works by Mozart, Copland, Brahms, Schumann and contemporary composers, as well as various jazz titles. In 2006 he won a Swedish Grammy as Classical Soloist of the Year.
His dedication to chamber music plays an important role in his musicianship. He performs at Swedish and international festivals and he is the Artistic Director of Östergötland Music Days in Sweden.
Staffan Mårtensson is also an accomplished conductor, with a Masters degree from the Stockholm Royal College of Music. He leads orchestras and symphonic wind ensembles all around Sweden.
For his contributions to Swedish musical life he was awarded the Royal Medal Litteris et Artibus in 2014.
