David Medina, clarinetist formed in the famous Venezuelan social and musical program known as El Sistema, studied with José Caldera, Jorge Montilla, Edgar Pronio, Valdemar Rodríguez and Luis Rossi.

In 1994 he was selected as a founding member of the National Children’s Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. In 2000 he was a founding member and first clarinet of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Andean Countries; In 2002, he was a founding member of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Americas, YOA.

Medina won first prize in the Aaron Copland Concert’s Competition at the V Festival of Young Venezuelan Clarinetists in 2001, and first prize in the Carl Nielsen Concert’s Competition in 2004 at the VI Festival.

In 2006, obtained his Undergraduate Music Degree in Clarinet Performance at the « Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales » in Caracas, under the tutelage of maestro Valdemar Rodíguez. Medina went on to earn a Masters Degree in Clarinet Performance at the Simon Bolivar University of Venezuela in 2014, under the tutelage of maestro Luis Rossi.

Dedicating over the years to researching clarinet in Venezuela, he received « Publication Mention » on his thesis « The Clarinet History in Venezuela » and « Outstanding Mention » on his thesis « The Teaching of Clarinet in Caracas between 1970-2013. »

For 17 years he was Principal Clarinet of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, performing under the baton of maestro Gustavo Dudamel and many other renowned conductors including Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sung Kwak, Hannu Lintu, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Helmuth Rilling, Daniel Barenboim; debuting in the most important concert halls in the world during  vatious tours with this orchestra. In addition, Medina also can be heard on the CD and DVD recordings under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label with master conductors Gustavo Dudamel and Claudio Abbado.

Medina has worked as a clarinet teacher in different training centers in the System of Orchestras of Venezuela, in the Latin American Academy of Clarinet, in the Simón Bolívar Music Conservatory; as well as guest teacher in other countries of Central and South America.

Currently, David Medina is the Clarinet Soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile and teaches at the Institute of Music of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Since 2014 he is a Buffet Crampon Artist and since 2019 a Vandoren Artist.

En 1994 fue seleccionado como miembro fundador y primer clarinete de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Infantil de Venezuela, con la cual realizó diversas giras internacionales. En el año 2000 fue miembro fundador y primer clarinete de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Juventudes de los Países Andinos; en el 2002, formó parte de la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Las Américas.

En el Año 2.001, obtuvo el 1er Premio en el Concurso Aaron Copland realizado en el marco del V Festival de Jóvenes Clarinetistas Venezolanos; así como tambien en el año 2004, el 1er Premio del Concurso Carl Nielsen marco del VII Festival. En abril 2015 participó como semifinalista en el Concurso Internacional de Clarinetes de Ghent (Bélgica).

Realizó sus estudios de ejecución instrumental con el maestro Valdemar Rodríguez en el Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales, obteniendo el Título de Licenciado en Música Mención Ejecución Instrumental en diciembre de 2006. Luego, en Octubre del 2014, obtuvo el Título de Magister en Música, mención Ejecución Instrumental bajo la tutela del maestro Luis Rossi en la Universidad Simón Bolívar de Venezuela.

Dedicándose durante años a la investigación, obtuvo Mención Publicación en sus tesis « Historia del Clarinete en Venezuela » y Mención Sobresaliente en su tesis de post grado « Panorama Histórico sobre la Enseñanza del Clarinete en Caracas desde 1970 a 2013 ».

Medina, se ha desempeñado como profesor de clarinete dentro de diferentes núcleos de formación en el Sistema de Orquestas de Venezuela, en la Academia Latinoamericana de Clarinete, en el Conservatorio de Música Simón Bolívar; así como maestro invitado en países latinoamericanos.

Durante 17 años fue el Primer Clarinete de la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela, bajo la batuta de su Director Titular Gustavo Dudamel; teniendo la oportunidad de trabajar con Directores de talla mundial como: Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sung Kwak, Hannu Lintu, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Helmuth Rilling, Daniel Barenboim, entre otros; debutando entre las salas de concierto más importantes del mundo durante las diferentes giras realizadas con dicha orquesta; así como en las grabaciones de CD y DVD con el prestigioso Sello Deutsche Grammophon bajo la batuta de los maestros Gustavo Dudamel y Claudio Abbado.

Actualmente David Medina es el Solista de Clarinete de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile y Profesor de Clarinete en el Instituto de Música de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; desde el año 2014 es Artista Buffet Crampon y desde 2019 Artista Vandoren.
