Toine Thys is bold and reckless musician, a central figure for saxophone and bass clarinet in Europe, with a warm tone. He is active as a leader of his own projects, and a much demanded sideman through Belgium, France, Netherlands. He can be heard as well in Western Africa, South-Korea and Canada.
Since 10 years Thys leads the TOINE THYS TRIO with Arno Krijger on Hammond organ and drummer Karl Jannuska, and will release in 2019 its 3rd cd, featuring Sam Yahel on organ, and Hervé Samb on guitar. He co-leads ORLANDO, a Belgian-french project, as well as OVERSEAS together with Egyptian oud player Ihab Radwan.
Toine is increasingly involved with teaching in African context. Together with trumpetist Laurent Blondiau he founded a brass instrument school in Burkina Faso named Les Ventistes du Faso, a concept that is intended to be extended to other countries, like Benin, Senegal or DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo).
He is very involved with musicians rights, as a founder of FACIR, the Federation of Belgian musician.
